Five Books To Read Before The Summer Ends
It’s Been a Cruel Summer for Reading
Let’s just say reading hasn’t been too kind to me this summer. I’ve lost count of the number of books I’ve started only to DNF soon after for a lack of interest. It’s not that the books I’ve tried to read weren't interesting, I just didn't have the capacity to read and enjoy them.
Have-To-Read Summer TBR
Thankfully, I’m turning a corner! I want to read as much as I possibly can before the summer ends. To help narrow down my lofty goal, I curated a ‘Have to Read’ Summer TBR of five books; each one as unique, engrossing, and insightful as the next. I’ve made my way through a few of these already and I’m looking forward to starting the others soon. If you’re looking for a few books to round out your summer reading lists, check these suggestions out!
You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty By Akwaeke Emezi
If I could sum this up in a few words, I'd say its: unencumbered, compelling, rich with dialogue, and messy. A five star emotional, whirlwind that goes there and then some. It owes me nothing, but a sequel I’m sure will never come.
The Counselors By Jessica Goodman
This twisty thriller about three teenage best friends working at a prestigious summer camp where a body is discovered is unputdownable. It’s gripping with plenty of high stakes. If you have any camp experience, be it on the counselor or camper side, you’ll want to pick this one up.
Our Wives Under the Sea By Julia Armfield
Literary League’s August pick follows a woman whose wife begins acting strangely after returning from a disatrous deep sea mission. As someone who refrains from the horror fantasy genre, I’m ready to see how this one develops. Hopefully this dark, intimate, and eerie work of literary fiction doesn’t result in too many sleepless nights. Who am I kidding?! I know it will.
The Afrominimalist’s Guide to Living With Less By Christine Platt
I’m always in search of inspirational guidances that focus on living with less and building an intentional closet; Especially when told through the perspective of a fellow Black, female minimalist. As I read, I hope to identify harmful patterns contributing to my high consumption and best practices to implement when parring down my own wardrobe with intention; perfect for my upcoming summer to fall closet trade out.
A Hundred Other Girls By Iman Hariri-Kia
This modern, millennial take on Lauren Weisberger’s, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ is stellar! It’s perceptively funny, quick-witted, and delightful. I’m not even finished and I’ve already hailed it a five star read. It’s sure to be talked about and praised well into the cooler months.
