The Girl He Used To Know By Tracy Garvis Graves
Rating: 5 Stars
Brief Synopsis:
This dual timeline, two person perspective carried narrative shares the story about a beautiful and peculiar to most woman who reconnects with an old flame after ten years bringing on memories of their past along with a dark moment that contributed to their riff.
What I Liked:
Whew, y’all—this one wrecked me a bit. This story broke my heart, made me smile, and had me shedding tears. The writing was filled with depth and purpose. The details appropriately added layers to the characters without feeling as if I were being drowned by words. I appreciated the intentional development and portrayal of the story’s lead. Be it for the better or worse, it was interesting that Annika was misunderstood by most, but yet had this natural ability to just capture all that she encountered instantly.
What I Didn’t Like:
Based on the timeframe in which the book was taking place, I had an inkling the ending elements could be forthcoming. I was unsure how they’d be introduced. So, where the ending was handled well, it surprised me with the direction it took.
Overall:
I must have been a glutton for getting gut punched because I finished this in two days. It’s hard to review a book that’s comprised of so much ever present and consistent heart. If you haven’t read it, change that. I will encourage you to keep those tissues close. Your heartstrings will be pulled in all sorts of directions.
