How to Style A Turtleneck For The Holidays
Oh, Hey Holiday Season
The holiday season is here and I, for one, am shocked and so elated. I rarely take any time off during the year apart from doctor appointments or for the rare occasion I get sick. When the holidays come around, I always take about two weeks off. Where my time off is usually divided between minimal gift shopping and decorating sessions, it’s also the one time of year I can recharge.
I do not have any formal plans other than being as low key as possible. Without fail though, I always get an invitation to one or two impromptu kickbacks that require me to get out of my lounge wear and actually get dressed to the tens. This is not a problem for me seeing as I love holiday attire. Give me all the sequence, emerald greens and Black shaded garments and let me wear them an infinite amount of times until mid January.
Turtlenecks To The holiday Rescue
With my intentional closet building and all, I’ve done more purging of clothing as opposed to shopping for them. The pieces I would wear in my closet for holiday outings seem better suited for more formal gatherings. Not that I’m anti a formal moment, I just want pieces a little less flashy for the type of kickbacks I’d likely attend.
I’ve been looking for a piece to add to my closet that is chic for the holiday season while also being something I can add to my everyday clothing rotation. After spending about ten minutes checking out Pinterest for some inspiration, I kept seeing turtlenecks. Yes, turtlenecks. I used to love a turtleneck back in my day, but I’ve not worn one in years.
Without much thought, I took to Etsy. I wanted a ribbed knit version, but I wanted the vendor selling it to have a variety of shade choices for me to choose from because I hadn’t settled on what color I wanted. After a little search, I found the perfect choice. I ordered this one in a Black shade because I felt it was the most versatile, chic, and perfect for the holidays option.
My Etsy Turtleneck Review
I took a medium based on reviews and the vendor’s size guide. My only issue with the garment was the tag. I ended up having to cut it off because it was itchy and it kept poking me in the back of the neck. Once I cut the tag off, the fit of the turtleneck was much smoother. The fabric overall is soft and stretchy. As someone who has an irrational fear of anything or anyone hugging my neck, I’m also happy to report the turtleneck is Mary approved in the loose neck section.
Four Ways to Style A turtleneck For The Holidays
I curated four easy looks with the new turtleneck addition and items from my closet. Each look varies from semi-formal to everyday. As always, most of the items I’m showcasing are old. I’ve linked similar versions from either sustainable brands or smaller Etsy vendors at the bottom of this post. I’m so excited about these stylings and even more excited to wear them out this holiday season.
LOOK NO. 1
Black Turtleneck + Green Longline Plaid Jacket + Black Skirt + Black Knee High Suede Boots
Paging Cher Horowitz! Someone get me to the set of Clueless, please. The subtle green and gold buttons from this longline jacket gives more of a professional and preppy look. I’ve had these knee high boots for the last four years and I’ve worn them once. I’ll trade out the skirt for a pair of black denim jeans to extend their closet life and for more of an everyday look.
LOOK NO. 2
Black Turtleneck + Wide Leg Burnt Orange Pants + Black Velvet Mules
I’ve had these wide leg pants from Target for three years now. Every time I thought about giving them away or donating them, I couldn’t. I’m so glad something stopped me. Since this reads more on the semi-formal side, I would likely reserve this look for a New Year’s Eve Party, but don’t let me stop you from wearing a mirrored look for a different occasion. The more occasions the look can serve, the better. We love versatility around here.
LOOK NO. 3
Black Turtleneck + Oversized Jacket + Faux Leather Leggings + Chelsea Boots
This is my 90’s tribute holiday look. The oversized jacket with the faux leather leggings gives such femininity and edge to the turtleneck that I could easily see me wearing this combination most anywhere. Plus, if you’re looking for an ensemble that’s extremely warm during the cooler months, look no further because this is it. Your girl was sweating.
LOOK NO. 4
Black Turtleneck + Black Denim Overalls + Black Velvet Mules
With every styling, comes a favorite look. Hi favorite look. If I’ve learned anything by shopping my closet more often, it’s this: when in doubt, a monochromatic look will win. The velvet mules bring sophistication to this otherwise causal look, but I’m excited to swap them out for black loafers once I decide to invest in a pair to create yet another everyday look I can wear long after the holiday season ends.
