Book Review: It’s Not All Downhill From Here by Terry McMillian
“I have finally realized that I will never look like I did last year or the year before that. I’ll never be able to do some of the things I once did and I’m still not sure what I was supposed to learn that I haven’t”-Lo Curry
Loretha, “Lo” Curry is about to celebrate her 68th birthday-which happens to be the day before New Year’s Eve. She owns a couple of her own businesses, married to her once wide receiver turned construction company owner husband, Carl-who still has tricks up his sleeves, and she’s maintained strong friendships with a group of women she’s known most of her life.
Lo’s world is turned upside down after an unexpected loss and a revealed secret. Where she wants to overcome her grief, Lo is left deciding to cling to the familiar or take a hold of her life and turn over a new leaf regardless of societal constructs associated with age.
Thanks to my mother, I’m familiar with Terry McMillian, but this is the first time I’ve read any of her work. I think many can relate to Lo’s desire to implement real change for the better, but not quite being able to fully commit to the process for reasons of grief, fear, doubt, and circumstances. I think Ms. McMillian does an incredible job at shedding light on mental instability and it’s long term affects that often go undiagnosed.
This book was an unexpected delight and I’d highly recommend it.
