Let’s get rael, periods

A Costly and Wasteful Way of Life

Look, we’re grown and have been managing our cycles for years. I can remember being fairly young and asking my mother if reusable feminine products existed. I asked out of curiosity related to cost savings. I figured between the number of years us women ride the monthly crimson wave (Thanks, Clueless) X the cost of each product we used to manage them equates to an expensive way of life. My mother said she wasn’t aware of any reasonable feminine products, but assured if cloth diapers were an option, the development of reusable feminine products was likely right around the corner.

Look No Further Than Rael

I give you the corner! Rael is a female lead company that develops holistic cycle and skin care products that are sustainable, clean, and high performing. It’s mission is to to empower women to have healthier relationships with their periods. I’ve used Rael’s Organic Cotton Pads a time or two before. However, it was only last year that I discovered they had an entire line dedicated to reusable period care products.

Giving Reusable A Try

I can ballpark it, but I am not a person that can pinpoint exactly when my period is expected to start. So, it’s no surprise that on more than one occasion, I’ve been out of stock of period care products when I’ve needed them the most. As I try to live a less wasteful lifestyle and keep a steady period care stock on hand, I figured this maybe the best time to give Rael’s reusable line a try. Rael has so graciously gifted me a few items that I think are the best places to start when considering reusable feminine products. Let’s see what I got.

The Rael Reusable Products I’m Geeking Over

  • Organic Cotton Tampons: Yes, I know this is not a reusable product. I’ve used these particular Organic Cotton Tampons before. As far as tampons go, these are pretty comfortable. I love that they’re made out of 100% cotton and they provide 8 hour of protection from leaks. If my day isn’t too heavy, 8 hours coverage allows me to get through a full day of work uninterrupted. I used to not pay attention to the time windows period care products cautioned its consumers to follow. The moment I found out about toxic shock though, I put all of my tampons, this one included, on a mental timer.

  • Organic Cotton Reusable Panty Liners: This is the product I’m most excited to use! Where I do wear tampons, I prefer to wear pads over tampons. Through no substantiated research to valid my observation, I feel like my periods last longer when I only use tampons. Pads offer a breathable option and keeps my fears of toxic shock at bay during my nighttime snoozes. These Reusable Organic Cotton Panty Liners can be used up to 120 times, is a cotton based absorbent, and eliminates orders. I’ll have to get use to their maintenance, but it’ll all be worth it if it’ll save me some money and reduce my excessive waste.

  • Reusable Period Underwear: I love that the Reusable Period Underwear holds as much as three tampons and are just as comfortable as any everyday pair of underwear. They’re breathable, come in different sizes to adjust to your flow needs, and they have a reusable waterproof insert that eliminates leaks. If you’re like me, you have panties dedicated for your periods. They’re probably dark in hue and have years of wear and tear. I know I should probably replace them, but they come in so clutch that I can’t seem to quit them. I’m excited to upgrade my period panties inventory and purge my old tried and trues for a more sustainable and fashion friendly option.

  • Reusable Mensural Cup and Case Set: This is the one I’m the most interested and apprehensive to try. The Mensural Cup and Case Set comes in three different sizes to help eliminate leaks for those super, regular, and light period days. I love that its soft silicone base allows for it to be worn without change for up to 12 hours. The case that comes with the mensural cup is a nice added touch and alleviates any of my confusion associated with figuring out how to store it. My apprehensive is related to how it’s inserted and how it feels once in place. With my experience with tampons though, I’m sure I’ll be able to handle it. I’ll keep you posted once I give it a whirl.
