Book Review: The Ties Tether by Jane Igharo

Azere is a 25 year old creative director living in Toronto, Canada. In her mother’s pursuit of finding her a Nigerian husband, Azere finds herself on a blind date with a patriarchal man who has his sights on solely domesticating her.

After fleeing this disastrous date, Azere retreats back to a hotel lounge only to meet a stranger by the name of Rafael. After the exchange of some quick witted and flirtatious banter, Azere and Rafael engage in night unlike one she’s ever experienced. What follows is Azere grappling with pursing a relationship with Rafael or staying true to her promise to her father and finding a Nigerian man to marry and lead their household.

I absolutely loved this read. Most romance novels stick to this will they or won’t they troup and believe me, I’m here for those. However, this story’s development runs a little bit deeper than that. I was pleasantly surprised at its twists and secrets. I lost count of the many audible ‘gasps’ and ‘oh’s’ I exhaled while I listened to this via the Libro.fm platform.

It was also refreshing to have female and male voice-over artists portraying Azere and Rafael. It’s just nice to hear a male’s voice reading a male’s thoughts.  Also, why isn’t Rafael real? This book is not one to miss. If you’re like me, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you finish it. Not because it’s short, but because it’s captivating and authentically heartfelt.

Also, can we hear it one time for the book’s cover art?
