Book Review: Beach Read by Emily Henry
January Andrews is a 29 year romance novelist who is recovering from a break up and a big move from the big Apple to Michigan. After his death, January discovered her father had a second life and beach house she never knew existed.
In an effort to shelve out another one of her romance novels, January reluctantly visited her father’s beach house only to discover her college nemesis and fellow novelist, Augustus “Gus” Everett, was staying at an adjacent beach house. This sounds like the makings of a “meet-cute” if I’d ever heard of one.
I enjoyed the author’s approach to romance in that both leads seem like every day people. There’s something refreshing about reading about individuals that are either struggling with being in neutral or has decided that fairy type love stories are shams. I also don’t recall reading any romance novels that include the investigation of a cult.
I appreciate the author speaking to and elaborating on the realities of writer’s block from the perspective of authors. We like to think our favorite authors are working on their next installments with ease, but through this book, we get a true sense that there’s quite a bit of time, planning, and pressure associated with writing a book.
Though the title of the book gives off major Summer vibes, I think this is one you can read at any point throughout the year as a pick me up or escape. And not to influence your thought, but try to read this and not envision Busy Phillips as January. You won’t be able to, I promise.
